"KELLOGG — The visiting Hawks led 14-0 after the first quarter, then weathered a Wildcat comeback before escaping with the nonleague victory at Andrews Gymnasium.

Katy Ryan had 10 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots for Lakeland (2-3), and Izzy Kirk added 10 points.

Kellogg (4-2) pulled within one point in the waning moments, before two free throws by Taylor Elpers gave the Hawks some breathing room.

“We played an incredible first quarter, and a great second quarter, and then just lost our momentum in the second half,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Kellogg made a great run, and we started playing not to lose a little bit.”

Elpers finished with eight points and seven rebounds, and Mel Loutzenhiser had seven points and four steals.

Hailey Cheney scored 12 points to lead Kellogg, which travels to Moscow on Friday.

After six straight on the road to open the season, Lakeland faces Colville on Friday in its home opener.
